My daughters are free to respectfully voice their opinions so one day the girls said “Mama, why do you want us to embrace our natural hair and you still straighten yours?” That was the moment everything clicked. Hearing them say that was equivalent to running at a high rate of speed into a brick wall. I wasn’t practicing what I was preaching. I had done enough research to know better.
I was not at all prepared to big chop my hair so I started to transition. That lasted for about 8 months and I was OVER IT! One day I picked my daughters up from school and I decided to cut it all off. The big chop process will take you DOWN! During the chop I was so sure and confident, but when all the hair was gone I felt so empty. What the hell did I just do? It took me awhile to get used to but my confidence grew as I adopted more of a hair routine.
I am 5 years into my natural hair journey and I have never loved my hair so much. With 4 natural melanin goddesses under one roof you can imagine how stocked up our product cabinet is. Two of us have low porosity hair and the other two have a high porosity. I started to research all of the harsh ingredients that was in the shampoos i used on our hair and I decided to switch things up.
