A morning routine that actually works!

Back to school morning routine: The morning routine sets the tone for the day

I will never forgive myself for arguing with my parents about taking a nap when I was younger, because I am begging for those naps today. Making sleep a priority is the key to having a good start in the morning, but in my opinion, the wake up process is where it starts. Here are some tools you can add to your morning routine to make for a peaceful day.

  1. Music - Turn your house into a calm safe space in the morning. There’s a portable speaker that you can connect your phone to, Bluetooth speaker , Open apple music and search for a morning playlist. If you dont have apple music there are PLENTY of morning playlists on YouTube.

  2. Prayer - I encourage everyone to start your day off with a prayer of thanks. You're breathing, that’s enough to be thankful for.

  3. Breathe - Ok, exhale and let me explain. A few intentional deep breaths in the morning can boost your mental and physical well being. Mindful breathing can increase your energy levels, reduce stress, and strengthen the immune system.

  4. You can pack your lunch the night before, but if you want to have some warm food try carrying your lunch in these Bento Lunch containers from Amazon.

Morning routine example (The struggle is real but we can do this)

6:00am - Wake up/Pray/Journal/

6:15am - Breakfast

Or (not all of my daughters like to eat breakfast, they will have a smoothie or juice)

6:15am - Self care/get dressed

6:55am - In the car

Tips to make you and your teens morning smoother.

  1. Lay everything out the night before. Down to the socks.

  2. Put the phone down and get some rest.

  3. Create a checklist or a schedule of your entire week on Sundays. Include all practices, pilates classes, dance recitals etc…

  4. Reset the house the night before so that you have a blank canvas to work with in the morning. When you go to make that smoothie, you dont want to have to wash out the blender from the night/day before then make your smoothie. Resetting the house really should be at the top of this article!!

Ways to avoid anxiety in the morning

1. Avoid yelling - For hard sleepers, use a stern but gentle tone. (Psst..its too early in the morning to be doing all that hollering)

2. Remember that everyone has a unique waking process - Customize the routine and allot the necessary amount of time for those customizations. It takes 2 of my daughters a minute to warm up in the mornings, so they have to add an extra 15 minutes to their morning routine. They can sit on the side of the bed, stare into space, pray, stretch or whatever it is they need to do to wake up and start the day. I would love to tell you that every morning is smooth, but I can’t. Some weeks are better than others, but it is important that you celebrate the good weeks and learn from the “bad” ones.
